TMJ Migraine & Headache Relief in New Orleans

    For Patients

Personalized Treatment for TMJ Headaches & Migraines

Chronic headaches and migraines are often connected to dysfunction within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). When the jaw joints and surrounding muscles become strained or imbalanced, they can contribute to recurring migraine symptoms, facial pain, neck tension, and persistent headaches.

At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of New Orleans, we provide personalized TMJ headache treatment focused on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of your discomfort. Whether you are searching for a headache doctor near you, a migraine specialist in New Orleans, or long-term headache relief, our team offers comprehensive evaluations and non-invasive therapies designed to improve comfort and quality of life.

Understanding the Connection Between TMJ and Migraines

The temporomandibular joints connect the jaw to the skull and play a critical role in speaking, chewing, swallowing, and overall jaw movement. When these joints become inflamed, strained, or misaligned, surrounding muscles and nerves throughout the face, jaw, neck, and head may also become irritated.

For many patients, TMJ dysfunction contributes to recurring headaches and migraine symptoms that may not fully respond to traditional migraine therapies alone. TMJ and migraine headaches are commonly associated with jaw clenching, muscle tension, inflammation, and stress placed on the surrounding nerve pathways.

At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of New Orleans, we focus on identifying whether TMJ dysfunction may be contributing to chronic headaches so treatment can target the source of the problem rather than simply masking symptoms.

    What Are TMJ Headaches?

TMJ headaches are headaches that develop as a result of dysfunction within the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. These headaches are often caused by muscle tension, jaw clenching, inflammation, or strain affecting the temporomandibular joints.

Unlike general headaches, TMJ headaches are frequently accompanied by jaw discomfort, facial tension, clicking or popping in the jaw, and pain that radiates into the temples, neck, or shoulders. Many patients also experience worsening symptoms during stress, after chewing, or upon waking in the morning.

Because TMJ headaches and migraines can overlap significantly, a comprehensive evaluation is important for identifying whether jaw dysfunction may be contributing to chronic pain patterns.

Symptoms of TMJ-Related Migraines & Headaches

TMJ-related migraines can present differently from patient to patient, but many individuals experience recurring pain and muscular tension that affects daily comfort and sleep quality.

    Common symptoms may include:

    • Intense or throbbing headaches
    • Pain near the temples or jaw joints
    • Facial tenderness or pressure
    • Jaw clicking or popping
    • Difficulty chewing comfortably
    • Neck and shoulder tension
    • Morning headaches
    • Jaw clenching or tightness
    • Sensitivity to light and sound

Because symptoms often overlap with other conditions, professional evaluation is important for determining whether TMJ dysfunction may be contributing to recurring headaches.

    Patient experiencing TMJ-related migraine symptoms

Our clinic provides personalized TMJ headache treatment designed to reduce muscular strain, improve jaw function, and relieve the pressure contributing to migraines and chronic headaches. Rather than focusing only on temporary symptom relief, we work to identify the structural and functional issues affecting the temporomandibular joints.

Depending on your symptoms and evaluation findings, treatment recommendations may include oral appliance therapy, bite stabilization, jaw muscle relaxation strategies, and advanced diagnostic evaluations to better understand how your jaw is functioning. Sleep-related factors, nighttime clenching, and airway concerns may also be considered as part of your care plan.

Our goal is to help patients experience fewer headaches, improved jaw comfort, better sleep quality, and long-term migraine relief through personalized, non-invasive therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMJ Migraine and Headache Relief in New Orleans

    Q. When should I see a headache specialist in New Orleans?

    A. If you experience frequent headaches, migraines, or persistent facial pain that does not improve with typical medication, it may be time to visit a headache specialist in New Orleans. Many chronic headaches are linked to underlying issues such as TMJ dysfunction, jaw clenching, or sleep-related breathing disorders. Identifying the root cause is key to long-term relief.

    Q. Can TMJ disorders cause migraines and chronic headaches?

    A. Yes, TMJ dysfunction is a common but often overlooked contributor to migraines and recurring headaches. When the jaw joint is strained or misaligned, it can place stress on surrounding muscles and nerves, triggering head pain. Patients who grind their teeth or clench at night may also wake up with morning headaches or migraine symptoms.

    Q. What options are available for headache relief in New Orleans?

    A. Headache relief in New Orleans may require more than symptom management. At the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of New Orleans, we evaluate whether jaw dysfunction, muscle tension, or airway obstruction during sleep is contributing to your pain. Treatments may include TMJ therapy, custom oral appliances, and other non-surgical approaches designed to relieve pressure and restore balance.

    Q. How do I know if I need a migraine specialist in New Orleans?

    A. You may benefit from seeing a migraine specialist in New Orleans if your migraines are severe, recurring, or accompanied by jaw pain, clicking, facial soreness, or sleep disruption. TMJ-related migraines often go undiagnosed because they mimic neurological headache patterns. A comprehensive evaluation can help determine whether the jaw or airway is involved.

    Q. Why do so many patients search for a “headache doctor near me” without finding answers?

    A. Many patients searching for a headache doctor near me have already tried medications or general treatments without success. That’s because headaches can stem from structural issues like TMJ dysfunction or nighttime clenching. Addressing these underlying causes can provide more lasting improvement than temporary pain relief alone.

    Q. What types of headaches does the TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of New Orleans treat?

    A. We help patients with a wide range of conditions, including:

    • TMJ-related tension headaches
    • Migraine headaches connected to jaw dysfunction
    • Morning headaches caused by clenching or airway disruption
    • Facial pain and pressure mistaken for sinus headaches

Our goal is to provide long-term solutions for New Orleans headache concerns through targeted, individualized care.

Having been diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2003, I was fitted for a head-gear breathing apparatus to alleviate the condition. After struggling with discomfort and lack of sleep, I discontinued use of the device. During a visit to my cardiologist in 2017, I was ordered to take another sleep test which revealed that the condition had reached a dangerous level and that it must be addressed immediately. I shared with Dr. G. Johnson my concerns from the past and he informed me that a new mouth piece for this sleep disorder was available and referred me to Dr. Terry Billings, DDS.

I contacted Dr. Billings and during my first appointment with him, after a series of tests, he determined that I had another condition, TMJ, which would have to be treated before addressing the sleep disorder. He explained to me that I would have to wear mouthpieces, one by day and one by night, for twelve weeks to correct this issue. My instant reaction was that as a Catholic priest serving as the rector of the St. Louis Cathedral, I often celebrate televised Masses during which a mouthpiece would certainly be a deterrent. Dr. Billings patiently and understandingly explained that I really had no option but assured me that he would be able to make weekly adjustments to the mouthpieces that would help with these concerns.

Now as I approach the final weeks of this treatment, I am pleased to share that I have been most satisfied with the care and attention of both Dr. Billings and his staff. The level of professionalism and proficiency which I have experienced in the weekly office visits have made a challenging issue bearable. It is amazing to me what the treatment of the TMJ has done for my overall health and well-being and as I now await the mouthpiece to address my sleep disorder I am most grateful to Dr. Billings for his diagnosis and excellent treatment during this period of preparation for it.

You don’t hear that often about a dentist, but his attention to detail, meticulous examination and in-office testing led to uncovering a severely deviated septum that needed prompt surgical intervention. I’m forever grateful for him and his entire staff.

Dr. Billings noticed that I checked yes to a few items on his questionnaire. When he began asking about my fatigue, sluggish feeling, etc. I blamed it on the kids and being a parent of two young boys. After his dental exam, he insisted that there could be more to my symptoms. After a chat, we decided to do an in-office Facial CT scan. It’s been 4 years since I had one, so I agreed. Everything was promptly scheduled, and their text reminders kept me on schedule.

I did the CT scan, and Dr. Billings pointed out my severely deviated septum and recommended I get a prompt ENT evaluation. I brought a printout of the CT to my next appointment, and I ended up having sinus surgery 3 weeks later.

Immediately after surgery, I knew something was different. After healing, I was sleeping better, breathing better and, sure enough, less sluggish and not reaching for my 3pm coffee. All from going to the dentist.

      My teeth look great, too!

Dr. Billings has opened my eyes to understand that dentists are part of the entire medical team, and when using their training to the fullest, they can change lives.
